KAMPALA, Uganda — The Government of Uganda, through the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), is constructing a 10-million-litre-capacity water reservoir on Kanyanya Hill in a move aimed at improving water supply reliability across parts of the Kampala Metropolitan Service Area.

The reservoir is part of efforts to enable NWSC to evacuate more water from the Katosi Water Treatment Plant and strengthen distribution to communities in Wakiso District and surrounding areas.

The project is expected to benefit several locations served by NWSC branches, including Wakiso, Kakiri, Gayaza, Nansana, Kanyanya, Luteete and Matugga.

The investment comes amid efforts to strengthen water distribution infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing population and expanding residential settlements across the metropolitan area.

Communities expected to benefit

According to the Managing Director Silver Mugisha, the reservoir is intended to improve supply reliability across a wide network of communities, including areas that have experienced pressure on existing distribution infrastructure.

In Wakiso, the listed beneficiaries include Wakiso Town, Bugembegembe, Kayunga, Kasengeje, Gombe, Mende, Nkoowe, Sala, Sanda Kavumba, Mpunga, Namasanga, Buyera, Muyomba, Kikokiro, Kapeke, Kiwazi, Kisimbiri, Kabowa and Najjemba, among other areas.

In Kakiri, the project is expected to support communities including Kakiri Town, Kikumbampa, Sebi, Kigaga, Mpegwe, Nakyelongosa, Kambe, Nadangira, Kitereede, Busujja, Nonve, Naguru, Buwanuka, Vugamira and Bukalango.

The Gayaza service area includes Kasangati Town Council, Bulumu, Kiwamulimu, Namavundu, Kayebe, Kyankima, Kitegomba, Gitta, Nabutaka, Nalusoga, Buwagga, Bukemba, Majijje and Wampewo.

In Nansana, the listed areas include Wamala, Katooke, Gganda Nasere, Nsumbi, Kawoko, Kabulengwa, Kireka Biira, Nakabugo, Kyebando, Kabumbi, Yesu Amala, Naluvule, Ssenge, Masiitowa, Mutuyanye, parts of Nabweru and Kibwa.

More neighbourhoods included

The Kanyanya service area is expected to benefit alongside communities in Kyanja, Tula Road, Kakungulu, Mpererwe, Namasole, Mugalu and Mwaze.

In the Luteete service area, the listed locations include Namere Road, Katalemwa Estate, Komamboga, Kitala, Kanyanya Road, Kanyanya Hill, Nameere, Kiteezi, Lusanja, Masooli, Kitetika, Nangabo, Bamba, Bumbu, Kitagobwa and Nakanaku.

The Matugga service area also features prominently among the anticipated beneficiaries. Communities listed include Kiryagonja, Lwadda, Matugga, Buwuzzume, Kungu, Kito, Kirwanira, Kabunza, Katalemwa, Wattuba, Namalele, Kikajjo Kabaga, Nekyesanja, Lubatu, Kabaganda, Wabitembe, Kayanga, Jjokolera, Mayirikiti, Mawule, Valley View and Green Estates, Jomayi, Kawanda, Kagoma, Kanyogoga, Kivuru, Nkojnkojeru, Mubende, Mabanda, Kisimu and Maganjo, among others.

The extensive list reflects the reach of the distribution network that the reservoir is intended to support.

Strengthening metropolitan water infrastructure

The Kanyanya Hill reservoir forms part of broader efforts to strengthen water supply infrastructure as residential and commercial development continues across the Greater Kampala area.

By improving the capacity to move treated water from Katosi into the distribution network, the project is intended to support more reliable service across the listed communities.

However, the project information does not specify a completion date or quantify the expected improvement in supply hours for individual neighbourhoods.

The actual impact will depend on the completion of construction, integration with the existing network and the capacity of downstream distribution infrastructure to deliver water to consumers.

For residents and businesses in the affected areas, the project represents a planned infrastructure intervention aimed at improving access to reliable water services as demand continues to grow.

Further details from NWSC on the construction timeline and commissioning plans would help establish when customers can expect to begin experiencing the benefits.
